Our Need for Change
Change is possible. It's like the wind pushing, bending, twisting, and lifting the landscape. Here, I offer you my simple reflection on this wild process.
We start with a need.
We offer a prayer.
We spark an idea.
We create a plan rooted in values.
We discover the motivation.
We lay out some foundational disciplines.
We practice them repeatedly.
We go back to the idea, rework the plan, revive the motivation, and go again.
We ask and try, and learn and try, and practice and learn.
We look inside and underneath for divine assurance that we are right and good.
We open our eyes after several hundred mornings, a few dozen speed bumps, and celebrate our new practices growing farther away from our old comforts.
We have walked away from the shadow of our memories towards the substance of wholeness and freedom.
We ingest the lessons and our bones are infused with hope, "I can change."
One day, perhaps on a walk with a new friend, she asks, “have you always been this way?”
We tell her of our aching need for change and how our faithful God reshaped that whispered prayer.
